Sep 26, 2013   Crime Prevention Bulletin: Telephone Hostage Scam
During recent weeks the VA Police and other local law enforcement agencies have collected reports of a phone kidnapping scam that has been occurring throughout the Boston/Metro Boston area.

In most incidents, scammers have alleged that a member of the scam victim's family has been involved in a car accident and claimed to have taken the victim's family member hostage. The scammers state that they have the hostage's cell phone and any attempts to disengage from the conversation will result in the murder or beating of the hostage. The scammers try to hold the victim on the phone as long as possible while attempting to persuade them to wire the money. However, some reports indicate that the scammers will hang up if challenged and not call back.

This scam has been tracked back to 1998. This particular scam appears to resurface every few years. Over the past few months, various law enforcement outlets have reported that they have seen an increased amount of reports involving this scam tactic along the entire east coast. What to do if you receive this call: Remain calm. Do not provide any personal information. Do not send money. Contact your relative. Contact the VA Police and/or your local law enforcement agency immediately.

For additional information on telephone and internet scams, visit the Federal Trade Commission website at http://FTC.gov/ or the Federal Bureau of Investigation website at http://www.FBI.gov/

Oct 21, 2013   Turn in your unwanted or expired prescription drugs.
ASHBY, MA - On October 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the Ashby Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will give the public another opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs. Bring your medications for disposal to the Ashby Police Department at 893 Main St. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.

Last October, Americans turned in 377,080 pounds-188.5 tons-of prescription drugs at over 5,300 sites operated by the DEA and nearly 4,000 state and local law enforcement partners. In its three previous Take Back events, DEA and its partners took in almost a million pounds-nearly 500 tons-of pills.

This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, Americans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines-flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash-both pose potential safety and health hazards.

Four days after the first event, Congress passed the Secure and Responsible Drug Disposal Act of 2010, which amends the Controlled Substances Act to allow an "ultimate user" of controlled substance medications to dispose of them by delivering them to entities authorized by the Attorney General to accept them. The Act also allows the Attorney General to authorize long term care facilities to dispose of their residents' controlled substances in certain instances. DEA is drafting regulations to implement the Act, a process that can take as long as 24 months. Until new regulations are in place, local law enforcement agencies like the Ashby Police Department and the DEA will continue to hold prescription drug take-back events every few months.

 Feb 8, 2013   Preparedness tips
Monitor the progress of the storm - timing and areas of greatest impact can change.

Listen to directions of Public Officials.

Have a full tank of gas. Gas stations may be impacted by power loss.

Prepare for extended power outages. Have emergency kit with flashlights, extra batteries, portable radio, bottled water, non-perishable food, first aid kit, etc.

Check the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

Have sufficient heating fuel. If using an emergency generator, understand how to run it safely, operating it outdoors away from any open window.

If your water supply could be affected by a power outage, (well-water pump system), fill your bathtub and spare containers with water.

Set your refrigerator and freezer to their coldest settings and minimize opening the door. Food can stay cold in a full refrigerator for up to 24 hours; a freezer for 48 hours.

Restoration of power will not begin until the storm subsides and conditions are safe for utility workers.

Be a good neighbor. Check on elderly relatives and neighbors.

Treat any downed wire as a "live" wire.
