ASHBY — Chief Derek Pepple is pleased to report that the Ashby Police Department is welcoming a new patrol officer, Officer Jennifer Thorburn.

Thorburn, a resident of Groton, is a graduate of Worcester State University, where she obtained a Bachelor of Science in Biology with a minor in secondary education. She most recently worked at Tahanto Regional Middle/High School as a science teacher.

Thorburn was sworn into the Department by Town Clerk Angela Jack on Tuesday, July 1. She will begin her training on July 14 at the Municipal Police Training Committee (MPTC) Holyoke Police Academy as a member of the 5th recruit officer course.

The course is an entry-level training program for new full-time police officers across the state, lasting about 20 weeks and covering over 800 hours of instruction. The curriculum is designed to equip recruits with the skills and knowledge necessary for a career in law enforcement, including problem-solving, procedural justice, ethical decision-making, tactical and operational skills, communication and de-escalation tactics, and fair, impartial policing.

Thorburn will graduate from the academy in December, and will then continue her training and development as a patrol officer for the Ashby Police Department.

“We are excited to welcome Officer Thorburn to our Department and community,” said Chief Pepple. “I look forward to witnessing her grow and develop in her career.”
