As the holidays approach, residents should be aware that the number of package thefts will increase.
Residents should consider the following tips from the Better Business Bureau to help safeguard their packages:
- Install a security camera or video doorbell on your porch, or wherever you have packages delivered to.
- Consider getting a P.O. box or having packages delivered to the workplace.
- Make use of delivery pickup locations.
- Set app/email alerts or text messages to track your packages.
- Provide drop-off instructions for where a package should be left.
- Ask a neighbor to grab and protect your packages until you return home.
- Require a signature upon delivery.
- Reschedule delivery or ask for a package hold while on vacation.
If you witness a package theft, do not approach the thief. Instead, note of their vehicle and license plate, if possible. If they are not disguised, get a physical description for the police.
Certain delivery services contract independent carriers to help deliver items during the holidays. Residents should be mindful of these individuals, who can be mistaken as thieves.
If you believe you are a victim of package theft, first check with the delivery service to make sure your package isn’t still in active transit. If it isn’t, contact the police immediately to report your package as stolen/missing. Also contact your courier and report your package missing.
