ASHBY — Chief Derek Pepple is pleased to report that the Ashby Police Department has joined the Northeastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council (NEMLEC) and will be able to utilize the many law enforcement resources that the council provides.
NEMLEC is a regional consortium of 65 police departments and 2 Sheriff’s Departments from across Northeastern Massachusetts who pool their resources to provide specialty units such as a SWAT Team, a Regional Response Team, a K-9 Unit, a Bike Unit and a Motorcycle Unit. NEMLEC also provides a School Threat Assessment and Response System Unit (STARS) with trained team members who can assist with school-based emergencies.
As a member, Ashby Police will soon designate an officer to be a part of one of NEMLEC’s specialty units. That officer and their assignment has not yet been determined.
Ashby Police applied for membership. Acceptance included a site visit by NEMLEC staff and a vote by the consortium’s Executive Board and member chiefs.
“Joining NEMLEC will vastly expand our access to highly trained specialty units that can respond to Ashby in the case of a major emergency, missing person search, or school-based incident at a moment’s notice,” said Chief Pepple. “We are proud to join this great organization, which will expand the law enforcement services that Ashby Police can provide.”
