ASHBY — Ashby Police Department Chief Derek J. Pepple and Ashby Fire & EMS Chief Mike Bussell report that the departments and their partners have responded to a serious motor vehicle crash on Monday on Turnpike Road.

On Monday, Feb. 19, at approximately 5:06 p.m., the Ashby Police Department responded to a motor vehicle crash near 324 Turnpike Road.

Upon arrival, officers found a head-on collision that left a 43-year-old Ashburnham woman trapped in a 2003 white Cadillac Escalade, and a 58-year-old Townsend man trapped in a 2008 red Ford pickup truck.

Ashby police officers shut down Turnpike Road at Main Street. The Townsend Police Department responded and shut down Turnpike Road at the rotary.

Ashby Fire & EMS arrived at the scene, and with assistance from Townsend Fire-EMS used hydraulic tools to successfully extricate both the man and the woman from their vehicles.

The 43-year-old Ashburnham woman was transported by Townsend Fire-EMS to a landing zone in Townsend, and from there was transported by Life Flight helicopter to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester.

The 58-year-old Townsend man was transported to the same hospital by Ashby Fire & EMS.

Both the man and the woman suffered injuries that appeared to be serious.

“I commend police officers from Ashby Police Department and Townsend Police Department, and firefighters and paramedics from Ashby Fire & EMS and Townsend Fire-EMS for their professionalism and quick response,” said Chief Pepple.

“During incidents such as these, seconds count. Our public safety professionals worked very effectively to secure the area, extricate the trapped persons, and transport them for care to hospital,” said Ashby Fire & EMS Chief Mike Bussell.

A preliminary investigation conducted at the scene makes it appear that the Escalade veered partially into the eastbound lane while travelling on Turnpike Road. As a result, the driver will be cited. The crash remains under investigation by the Ashby Police Department.
